Instilling Moral Values?

I felt awkward when the school asked me to teach Moral subject mainly because it isn't my field of study. But, lucky for me, other teachers in the school were kind enough to assist me on this.

It took me a while to be familiar with the syllabus and I see it as an opportunity to help the Education Ministry to achieve their mission to build well-rounded students.

My lecturer once told me that, teachers need creativity to teach young learners and till now, I am still trying to prove the relevance and effectiveness of this theory.

One way to creative teaching is to take learning outside the classroom. Therefore, this week, I had decided to bring my students for an outdoor activity. I asked my students to clean the school compound by collecting rubbish and trimming some flowers. The moral values behind this activity are to instill love and responsibility towards nature. Oh well... not all students participated fully in the activity, but at least, they had a short stress -free activity in school. When I saw smiles on their faces, I knew that I had achieve something from it.

The activity lasted for about 40 minutes. As a reward to their good work and behaviour, we went to watch other students playing futsal at the basketball court until the class ended.

And finally, meet my student (the final photo), Bobson. This student is the most active student in my class but Sometimes, he can be annoying and mischievous too. Hahaha... He loves to joke around with his classmates and enjoys his photos taken whenever possible. When I checked my digicam, I saw him in almost all my photos, with his funny face and his funny poses.

Hi Willie. I think it's great that schools teach about morals and ethics. I wish secondary schools in the U.S. adopt this teaching philosophy. It really does make a huge difference when young people have the right guidance in life and since they spend so much time in school with teachers, the teachers can have a big influence in their students lives.

It's hard to teach something that isn't your type of field but I guess you won't have problems with that Willie.

RoseBeLLe > They do not have it? Geee...it is compulsory here in Malaysia. Yeah, our people should learn good moral values.

Ayie > After a while, I am already used to it and i'm able to deliver it quite well.

did you say that it is hard to be a lecturer and easier to be a teacher in your last entry? i was once a temporary teacher in a primary chinese school and tat experience made me realize that i might be teaching wrong values to the children if i myself dont know where my values are :)

Moral subject is not as easy as it sound. I scored the lowest grade in that subject for my SPM in 1996.

OceanGirl > Hahaha...they smiled a lot.

Manglish > We all have moral values in ourselves. The delivery of that moral values are important so that the students will be interested in it.

BorneoFalcon > Me too. But in my case, I wasn't taught on how to answer the questions properly when i was in form 5. Today, we (teachers) are more informed of what to teach and how to answer SPM moral questions. Students should be grateful.

MsTikot > Boleh, tapi tak selalu. Nanti diorang pergi main pulak.

Lina > Thanks.

Hey willie,

dont worry,we learn along the way, just like us we are dad,we learn every single day to be a better dad, dont we?

i am proud of you, show them love, and they wil love others in return, give them respect, and they will respect others in return,,

again, well done. Life as a teacher is not easy but if your heart's calling is to be one, then the satisfaction is immense

in my new school ive been given two Moral classes. i kind of enjoying teaching the subject cos it is something that is dear to my heart. To instill values on young hearts as well as strengthening mine.

it's good what you did there willie. doing the actual thing rather than just telling.
