What Earth Hour?

Err...forgive my for not being so optimistic about earth hour and for not being a fan of earth hour. Forgive me for not appreciating what some environmentalists are trying to do. I have my own way, a silent way in helping the earth such as not throwing rubbish on the street, recycle paper for my notes etc. Switching light for one hour? How deep can the impact be?
Oh well...on Saturday night, I was driving on the street and I could see lights everywhere in Kuching just like any other nights. Who would actually bother to switch off the lights? They didn't care and nor do I.

I read newspaper on earth hour and was I supposed to be impressed by many big buildings that switch off the lights during earth hour? How about the the lights at home, where there are thousands of homes in one place? lights that were not switched off by individuals? Were there more of those than these big buildings? The fact is, on that night, there were thousands of homes that did not switch off the lights and millions of homes around the world that did not switch off their lights too. Should I be proud by a handful big buildings that switched off their lights? Not that I am not supportive of earth hour, but i think it is not even worth trying to knock out these absent minded people out there.

Hah! This is even funny! The shopping complexes in town claimed that they switched off their lights for an hour during earth hour? Hello shopping complexes owners, are you sincere or not? Or... are you trying to promote your superstore to attract more people come to your shopping complexes and in the end, you use more electricity for extending the opening hours? You guys are a joke man!

And for young unmarried couples out there...switching off the lights mean, an opportunity to go out kissing, hugging, groping, touching etc... I hate the view of it especially in public places!

What did I do that night? Oh well...earth hour or not, my life still went on. I went to a BBQ party that night and we didn't switch off the lights.

I guess, there are better ways to save the earth. It is definitely not the Earth Hour. But it is nice to have though...heheheh

There's one hypermart that harped on the fact that they switched off 70% of their lights for a good 10 minutes. Wow! 10 whole minutes. *sarcasm*

It may not make a big impact that we can see right away, but I think it would catch on. The deal is, people needs to know what they are doing to the earth, such as garbage on the street, in the river, in the woods as you've mentioned..

I read that if we don't use electricity for even one hour, we save tons of carbons dioxide released into the atmosphere by electric generators. You are right, it shouldn't be just one day in a year, everyone needs to play their part and do what they can at their homes to conserve energy.

Switching off one hour per year isn't going to create a big impact. Just to create awareness. Perhaps people will take note and be more mindful with energy consumption.

To me, Earth Hour is supposed to be symbolic. An event to remind us to control the damage, to reduce our carbon footprints..but some people are promoting it in a way as if switching off the lights can actually do something, because let's face it, we pollute more than we save.

Driving to and back from an "Earth Hour party" is already damaging Earth in a way, so if you say that you're doing something, you're doing it wrong.

So its actually just a matter of execution. Find a better way to do it, then maybe..just maybe, we'll make a difference.

i received an sms from mylongkang co-blogger Ah Tuong to switch off my lights for an hr and I said yes but being busy i continued with my work and before i knew it the time had passed and i had forgotten all about Earth hour :)

I did turned off my Lights Willie, but that was onl because i was asleep. hehehe!

but then again, i do agree with you on doing the little things in life that actually contributes more to the environment rather than so called "Turning off the lights for an hour!" Like an hour ig gonna make much of a difference when people litter on the streets like no body's business!

i think it's a great objective even though it's only for one hour. :)

Last year I switched off for one hour but not this year as it was unavoidable. However, I noticed quite a number of people in KL did switch off during Earth Hour.

I agree, the hype to promote earth hour consumes more energy, especially with the parties organized everywhere.

Haha, you guys even did open burning during earth hour.

Lina :Hypocrite or what that shop? Geee...

Cyril :That's more than enough reason to switch off your lights Cyril. Good work.

Faizal :Bah! Takut gelap pulak?

IcyBicy :Usually the event will die off after a while.

Norris :Hahaha...kesibukkan melanda sebagai bapa yeah?

Rosebelle :It is an on-going process to save the world.

Ivynana :hahaha...sejak bila pulak aku marah tok?

Manglish :That's a really good idea bro.

MeiTeng :yup. I think that's the least it can do. Creating awareness...

Fahriee :Symbolic? Why not print thousands of Earth hour flags and sell them to people to put on their cars...hahaha don't you agree bro?

BEngbeng :don't feel guilty. Sometimes we just can't help it.

Sunshine :Let us together stop littering. Okay?

LifeRamblings :The idea is good but the impact is probably less.
