My New Job

Yes! I come to my school at the right time and I am happy that my school is not far from where I live today (though I have to drive for more than one hour to reach there. Redefine far, please!). I am given a brand new table, placed in the newly-renovated staffroom together with the other newcomers to the school. Notice the word 'new' repeated thrice? Oh, I should include this - a new boss as well! What more could I ask for?

I have never thought that someday, I would be a school teacher.

I quit my job as a lecturer at a prestigious, government-linked, institution in Kuching to start a new career as a school teacher. Some might say the nature of these jobs are the same i.e. teaching, but I am in the opinion that being a school teacher is far more challenging as I have to deal with teenagers. A few days after I reported duty, I kept on thinking whether I have made the right decision and whether I would love the job. Dealing with teenagers can be very challenging, as many of you teachers out there would have discovered much earlier than me!

However, a week later, I told myself to accept my career change positively and accept my fate wholeheartedly. I am beginning to love the job though at one point of my life, I yearned for the job as a university lecturer. Experience taught me that it is not easy to get a place in the public university since the competition was stiff, even with my Masters degree.

A friend of mine always say "there is a blessing in disguise". A year after I failed my interview with UiTM Sarawak, I began to feel that being a university lecturer is not really the job for me. I am not saying this because I failed my interview, but from the information I gathered , the workload in university is heavier than the school and the working hours are not favourable to most lecturers. I was told that the lecturers have to work on Saturday and Sunday and even come at night to give lectures. The research, publications, travelling that they have to do? I guess, only those who have passion for the job will be able to cope with these workloads.

My family (whom are MOSTLY teachers!) encourage me to join secondary school and I have to admit that there are a lot of good things being a school teacher. It is true what many of my friends said about teaching in school. Today,

a. I only work half a day (12.40 pm to 6.20 pm.) from Monday to Friday (and sometimes Saturday);
b. I am getting lots and lots of holidays during school and public holidays. The longest school holiday will be 6 weeks and I will still get paid;
c. With the holidays I will get, I can spend more time with my family.

What can I say? I am happy with my job now. And to all my relatives who are teachers, we will have lots of barbecuing sessions this November! I just can't wait!!

I think being a teacher is one of the most rewarding jobs out there because you can make such a big impact on the lives of your students. Yes, being a teenager teacher is more challenging because it's that stage where kids are most rebellious. Right now, I'm looking into working for my school district too but they are not hiring. Actually they're laying off people right now due to budget cuts.
