Indonesian Maids be paid RM800?

For the past few weeks, Malaysian government has been trying their best to resolve the issues of Indonesian maids in Malaysia. Indonesian government had decided to stop sending maids to Malaysia due to maid abuse cases and underpaid maids.

However, his worries Malaysian government and after a thorough discussion, Indonesian government has agreed to continue sending Indonesian maids but with a proposal that Indonesian maids should be paid a minimum RM800. My first reaction was...

What? This is insane!

RM800 in Rupiah should be around 2K and even our diploma holders hardly earn a minimum RM800 salary here. I consider it the minimum wage is rather a selfish demand because maids are a necessity to Malaysians today since many mothers are in the workforce.

Consider these...
1. the maids are not even diploma holders how could they take away our salary?
2. Soon, Malaysians will look for other alternatives and the demand for Indonesian maids will fall, causing higher unemployment rate in Indonesia.
3. In the long run, many Malaysian mothers will have to quit their jobs to take of the kids and Malaysia will be shortage of female workers especially in teaching profession, nursing, hotels & restaurants and in government and private offices.

Indonesia should provide a win-win situation. With that, I raise my case!

so RM800 is too much? I'm not familiar with RM that's why

Ayie,
A security guard basic salary is usually 650 per month. And nobody pays for their food, lodging (unless they live in company's dorm, if there is one) and transport.

The common complains about Indonesion maids from my friend is that these maid barely know the basic housekeeping when they come to work at your place. It is as if Malaysian home is a training place before they go off elsewhere. :(

Do one really need to be taught how to wash dishes? I'm talking about an adult female here.

I see...i heard a lot of complains about Indo maids from malaysians actually.

We had some maids also before who knew nothing as in! Mom sent them back...

thanks for the info

Rm800 per month is way too much.. And like some had mentioned here, they're given a shelter and foods are provided.. they should be grateful that we malaysian provide much better living.

Even salesgirls pun makan gaji RM500 ja..lagi teruk. hari2 8 jam berdiri jak kerja kat kedai. Ive been there, done that, so i know....Maid can even watch TV after all the work.....

sigh.....betul2 menyusahkan.. camney mok berfamily daktok?

Maybe this will encourage locals to be maids since the salary is not bad.

Ya i agree with u bro.. such a ridiculous thing to pay Rm800 to the maid.. Even coffee shop waiter/waitress (agree w/ Uzitter) dont earn that much...In that case All Rise!-BLUE.

BlackWater > Ya betol

MahirahKamaludin > Kan? diorang gaji masih kecil tak complain pon atau minta lebih lebih.

Ayie > Rm800 is too much for Malaysians

Lina > Thanks for explaining.

Rudy > Ya la... nok lain sidak kedirik jak bayar.

DeeLoner > agree. Their work is easier compare to some of us who need to work under the hot sun and get paid less than RM800.

BorneoFalcon > The problem is, Malaysians are not getting that much. That is only what the Indon asked.

DesignationJazz > kitak org tok pun gaji kecik juak ba.

I remember an article from the local news in 2006 about the Philippine Govt demanded RM1430 a month if their maids are hired to work overseas. And the reaction to this demand was to turn to Indon maids due to their cheaper wage rate.

Now, an increase to RM800?
Where else can we look for cheaper maids ah?
Dont ask about our own. Guarantee jual mahal punya.

now-now people *smile*, it's kinda a logic but the Indonesian's gov should think about these as well...

RM800... let see:
accomodation (provided)-RM200
food (provided) -RM200
astro/telephone bills (used while employer/boss is not at home) -RM100 (or more)
transport (saved since live along with employer) -RM100

rough balance... RM200.

Need to pay the legal fee + health check up etc... hmm... I wonder how much left? hehehhe

Merryn > I'll be the first one to employ you. Hahaha

CheguCarol > Everything naik harga kan?

Elcynthia > Kita sendiri pun tak cukup makan kan?

Wow.. they are rich!

Outrageous demands!

wow, in that case, the wage is superfluous! i'm with you - now how do we win the case?

What I'm about to say may cause controversies or even encourage a heated argument, but guys, I have to say this:
True, the Pak Guards, Mak Guards here earn lesser than RM800. Also, no doubt that Salesgirl and Sales boy earn way lesser even by standing 24/7 in a supermarket.
However,
Consider this:
1) They're far apart from their own home ground, as compared to us Malaysians working in our own homeground, when we can see our families whenever we want to.
2) We as Malaysians, do have this bad habit of ostracising people - ie the Indonesians, Nepalese, Bangladeshis, for the very reason that we think we're superior than most of them. They have to deal with our attitude - all the time.
3) I think Malaysians have the tendency to overwork the maids. Come on, when you guys were younger, simple houseworks make you complain as if there is no tomorrow. They have to wash your cars, Sweep & Mop your house, Clean the windows, Cook for you, and tolerate it when you nag and rant at them.
4) They have families to feed as well.

All in all, Malaysians need them. Admit it. You do.

Ü

I've said my piece. Have a great day peeps.

LadyViral > yup.

Cherie > Rm500 to Rm600 should be reasonable.

YourSunShine > You got points but I have to disagree with you. Many of us are working overseas but still earn lower than the local people there. That's why many industries overseas prefer to hire Malaysians. But we don't complain much because we choose to take up that job.

Leaving your family behind is part and puzzle of the job as maids. What about us who still have to leave our family behind to work in West Malaysia or neighbouring countries? What about us who has a demanding boss? It's part and puzzle of work but it doesn't mean we can ask for more for what they can give.

Rm800 is a too much considering it is almost or higher than the rate of our own minimum wage. I guess having maids will remain for the rich. Poor people like us will definitely put off the idea of having maids.

Hehehe...again I raise my case. Arigato goazimas!

That's interesting. I am Indonesian living in UK, and for sure I am not familiar with maids nor Malaysian Ringgit, but 800 RM sounded a lot to me.
So what's the logic here, higher salary will guarantee less abuse???

RM800 is too much lah..in result, there will be less population of babies in the future..Family planning will be burdened.

Cute Indonesian girls? They look like Chinese.

Yay, expensive salary. You're right, if the maids are not diploma holders, they're not entitled to a higher salary.

Travel-Bunny said...

Dear Willie,

hah. its me again with all my analogies and perceptions.

For Malaysians who work overseas, their salaries would be more than what they're getting here at Malaysia - precisely the reason why they CHOSE to pick up that job.

The population in Indonesia is way more than the job opportunities they get. Its like a Supply and Demand curve.. There's too much demand to be complied with. So how? Remain unemployed and wait for Govt subsidy? Hence they are forced to work as maids overseas. The same goes for my mother's country - Philippines. There are diploma and degree holder who HAVE TO work as maids because they can't find a job in Philippines due to over population.

Let me lay it out for you.. If according to what you guys say... These Diploma and Degree holder from Philippines should be paid at least a thousand ringgit as maids, RIGHT? Because they own a piece of paper - Certificate.

Let's face it. They need to be adequately paid. I'm not saying that they should be paid higher than the minimum wage.. But adequately. Maybe if they raised the Wage for maids higher than that, I wouldve stood in a similar position as you guys. But for now, RM800 is fairly reasonable.

I'm someone whose mom used to be a maid. Ü
with no biasness and prejudice.

Have a great day.

Your SunShine > That's the whole point. We earn more when we work overseas and the indonesians also have been earning more than what they get in Indonesia when they work in Malaysia many years ago. Setting the minimum to RM800 is way beyond Malaysians capabilities to pay the maids. All we ask from them is to reduce the amount to RM500. When they bring that amount back, it worth thousands of rupiah. They will live like middle class people there.

High population u say. If they know that getting hard is not easy then, asking for more from Malaysians will cause more trouble for themselves isn't it?

Hahaha..whatever....you have your stand and i have my stand. And will not tolerate on that. Kekeke

RM800 is waayyy to high brother. I think RM500 is okay considering the chores they have to do like washing and cleaning. In some cases, their employers are super good and they do little at home and relax.

If you look at our locals working in coffee shops, some are paid only a mere RM300 for working 530am-11pm...

These people should be given better wages as they are locals, and they work more... NOt maids... Maids pay should be below RM500 especially if they are staying in with food and accommodation are provided.

RM800 isn't much lah...aiyooh you poor people, if you can't afford a maid don't ever think of getting one lah. just get one from your own country or get your wife work as your maid.
